In 2025, Chris Nancrede delivered a presentation, “Legionella Control for Plumbing Designers and Engineers”, to ASPE Indiana members focused on how plumbing designers and engineers can reduce Legionella risk.
Chris gave an overview of what risks facilities typically face and what Legionella outbreaks in facilities look like, including the transmission pathways.
There was a focus on how plumbing designers and engineers can include Legionella water management requirements into construction specifications. Specific requirements as well as the timing of their inclusion was also discussed. An emphasis was placed on including water management requirements at the start of the project and requiring Legionella testing throughout the course of construction.
Chris then comprehensively detailed the specifics and importance of a Water Management Program, as well as the 7 steps of that make up the process.
The presentation wrapped up by covered specific engineering approaches that can be taken to reduce Legionella. This included different types of filtration approaches, plumbing approaches to hot water loops, as well as piping material selection.
